Introduction |
Fly Fishing is one of the most skilled types of fishing disciplines today and puts any budding or experienced angler to the test when starting off, however a more rewarding style of fishing there has yet to be developed. The feeling of victory when a fly is taken from the surface of the water by a taking fish is indescribable and one of the more exciting achievements.
Traditionally only done of trout and salmon fly fishing has been extended to include species like, grayling, pike and now even tarpon and tuna in some parts of the world. When we look at the types of fly rods today one might ask how do you catch a pike on a fly but with purpose built heavy rods and reels these fish can be taken readily with pike flies and if you thought catching a trout on a fly was a rush you've got to try pike fishing with flies it can be a wild experience.

Venues for fly fishing are wide and varied in Ireland and you don't have to go far to track down a good trout water most counties in the country will have trout waters available to be fished but bear in mind that most of these trout waters are controlled by game fishing clubs and permission is needed to fish some lakes and rivers.

The types of fish that can be taken on flies has been opened up in the last number of year with the influence of the US fishing industry in Europe and types of flies and rods available for heavier fish is growing all the time.
One a recent episode of one of Matt Hayes fishing programs he spent the session catch carp on a light weight fly rod using dog biscuit glued to the hook so you can see if a fish will take a bait on or near the surface you'll catch them using a fly tackle set up.
The most important thing to be aware of is the need for the right weight of gear,there little point hooking into a powerful fish that you have no hope of landing so think first.
